The case study tracks the pathway of the adoption of biogas technology in Tuscany in the 2010s. It follows knowledge creation through the implementation of the first large-scale research programme between 1980 and 1986, to the spread of on-farm biogas plants. The discussion includes the external factors that created the conditions for the pathway to evolve. Partly, the Research Centre on Animal Production, which coordinated that pioneer programme, turned into a knowledge broker by disseminating technological improvements from northern Europe towards Italy to allow biogas implementation on arable farms. Enabling biogas adoption on Tuscan arable land and farms is the broadest impact of the research.
